Shutting Down Gitmo

The real Army motivator - big busted Army BratI saw that President Obama did a couple of things regarding the War on Terrorism last week, the most publicized being to shut down Gitmo. Oh, and I think it is cool that you can see all Executive Orders here.

Now, I sort of find it interesting that I really think they ought to shut down Gitmo. I have no basis for making that judgment. I have never worked for the military, in the military, have never read any military books, and I don't even really like military movies. So I am as qualified to be Commander-in-Chief as Clinton.

I guess fear is at the heart of my desire. I know that there are places that our government can put anyone and they may never be heard from again – no trial, no public information. Just a scary place off of US soil. I guess just because it is not US soil, to me, doesn't mean that we should follow different rules.

So like several of my more left-wing friends, I applaud the President for the Executive Order. It seems to be a little more substantive than including salsa as a vegetable for student lunches (Clinton did this; Reagan, as I recall, listed catsup in the same grouping – it has something to do with Federal funding of school lunch programs). I don't know. With the salsa Executive Order, at least I could understand part of it and "I could sink my teeth into that issue." Oh, maybe not. Guess I will try and find some hottie to grace this post. That way, the guys can get something useful out of this blog entry.

It's very difficult to respond with that image.

1. Gitmo is U.S. soil. Just like any military base. It is the U.S. when you are on it.

2. These are not traditional prisoners. They are not military. Which is at the heart of what makes this difficult. None of them fall under the Geneva Convention, they are not U.S citizens.

3. Not many people will take these prisoners. Why? Because they are known, hardened terrorists. We didn't round up villages of children or nuns. These are hard core terrorists. See here.

4. The world is a safer place because we locked those people up. I find it odd people don't understand that.

I have to go back to looking at that picture.

knot: they are not US citizens, but the US military has rounded them up because of their War on Terrorism. I know they are not traditional POWs, but they seem to be more like POWs than any other flavor of prisoner.

grant: boobs, where?

While not a big Obama fan, I am glad that Gitmo is shutting down. But now what? Where do you put these people? They are killers and are well-connected... Just like me!!!

Ha Ha Ha.....

The legal pickle is that we are not in a declared war with any particular country, we are keeping these prisoners "off shore", we don't acknowledge them as prisoners of war, or for violating US law, so what law are they supposed to have broken, and which court system should try them?

I must avoid the temptation to pull out my soap box on the whole war issue, so I will repeat the most important observation of this post.....

Yaaaaaay, BOOBS!

I got a lot useful out of it dear Leesa, though I did appreciate the hottie, too. But the salient point that you raise is that if a government can do it to one group of people, what is to keep it from doing it to any group or individual? I applaud Obama for doing this, despite the risk that some of these people pose. Our respective systems of jurisprudence (ours is the same as yours) are the best in the world, so let's use them as we should.

advisor: I admit it, the pic was a ploy to divert away from the words.

joe: thanks for the vote of confidence.

ian: yeah, you said it better than I did.

If those terrorists spent more time fraternizing with women like in the pictue, I'm sure there'd be a lot less terror in the world. "Make love, not war" as the saying goes...
